West Haven police add motorized bikes to patrol boardwalk

POSTED: 05/06/14, 7:13 PM EDT | UPDATED: 5 HRS AGO; NEW HAVEN REGISTER

The West Haven Police Department is testing out new technology for its Shoreline Patrol division. The department is currently testing a A2B Patroller bicycle, which is equipped with a 500 watt rear hub motor. The motor gives officers an alternative while still allowing them to pedal when they want to. The bicycle has two 36 volt rechargeable batteries that allows for an unassisted top speed of 20 mph and up to 20 miles on a single charge.

The police department puts a lot of effort into the concerns of the citizens and their issues. At this time, the officers on the patrol division park their patrol vehicles and walk the boardwalk area on a random basis. As the weather gets nicer, we will increase the Shoreline patrol to full time. The crime analysis division shows the Shoreline crime statistics are the lowest they have been in years.
This new technology will be added to the department’s Segway and mountain bikes that are currently used while on Shoreline Patrol.
