About the Courses

IPMBA offers internationally recognized Certification and Training Courses. These courses were developed by experts in the fields of police, EMS, and security cycling, and are used by public safety agencies around the world. This training, delivered to thousands of public safety cyclists each year by IPMBA’s cadre of certified Instructors, provides skills for safe and effective use of the bicycle in police, EMS, and security work.  Download a brochure. Be prepared for the street! This essential training combines Emergency Vehicle Operations for bike officers with patrol procedures, tactics, night operations, mock scenes, and basic bike maintenance and on-the-road repairs. Learn to ride like a pro, avoid crashes, and use your bike to foil the bad guys every time. Off-road riding and bike-specific live-fire exercises may be added at the instructor’s discretion.

Prerequisites: Law enforcement officer; basic bicycle-handling skills; good physical condition

Required Equipment: Police Cyclist Course Equipment List

Testing Procedure: Written and practical

Certification: IPMBA Police Cyclist Certification is available to licensed law enforcement officers who successfully complete the practical test, earn a score of 76% or better on the written test, become members of IPMBA, and submit applications for certification accompanied by the appropriate fee.

Be first on scene!  Nothing moves more swiftly through a crowd than a bike medic responding to a call for help.  However you use your bike fleet, this essential emergency vehicle operations course will improve your response times and help you meet your goals.  Learn to select and pack equipment, maneuver a fully loaded bike, and perform basic bike maintenance and on-the-road repairs.  Course includes night operations, mock scenes, scene safety, and defensive measures.  Off-road riding/search and rescue exercises may be added at the instructor’s discretion.

Certification: IPMBA EMS Cyclist Certification is available to qualified EMS personnel who successfully complete the practical test, earn a score of 76% or better on the written test, become members of IPMBA, and submit applications for certification accompanied by the appropriate fee.


Protect your beat!  This course is designed for non-law enforcement security personnel who patrol a wide array of facilities.  It produces confident, competent, and effective personnel who operate in a safe manner and reduce departmental liability.  Learn how to ride like a pro, avoid crashes, and safely and effective patrol all corners of your beat.  Course includes night operations, mock scenes, basic maintenance, and patrol procedures.  Off-road riding and bike-specific live-fire exercises (for armed personnel) may be added at the instructor’s discretion.

Prerequisites:  Non-law enforcement patrol officer (security, code enforcement, Explorer, etc.); basic bicycle-handling skills; good physical condition

Putting Your Explorers on Bikes


Riding a bike is not as easy as…riding a bike.  Public safety cyclists must learn how to ride both technically and tactically.  This intense course will equip you with the skills to teach public safety cyclists how to use their bikes safely and effectively.  Through in-class presentations, on-bike drills, mock teaching sessions, and peer and self-critiques, you will learn to identify and correct improper technique; assist students in overcoming difficulties; and incorporate various methods of instruction into the IPMBA courses.  This course is often described by graduates as one of the most challenging and rewarding classes of their careers.

Think you don’t need a bike-mounted mobile field force?  Think again.  Social media helps spawn crowds — some unruly — and bike officers are uniquely qualified to handle them.  And who better than a bike medic to ensure prompt medical attention is rendered if a team member or bystander is injured?  Whether you are preparing for political events, parties and raves, or just expecting your team to make it to the championship, this course will prepare you to manage your crowds and ensure prompt patient care in crowd situations.  Practical exercises include formations, single- and double-column riding, arrest/rescue techniques, squad withdrawal, and gas mask drills, complete with smoke and noise!

Certification:  IPMBA Bicycle Response Team Training Certificates of Completion are available to qualified Police, EMS, and security personnel who complete the course requirements.


 Do your bikes take a beating?  Having an in-house maintenance officer translates into less bicycle downtime, fewer expensive repairs, and safer, longer-lasting bicycles.  This hands-on course will provide you with the skills to maintain your fleet and perform all but the most technical repairs.  The curriculum emphasizes preventive maintenance, general repairs, and overhaul of component groups.  You will also learn fleet management principles and documentation methods.  Bring your bike and tools and prepare to overhaul!

Certification:  IPMBA Maintenance Officer Certification is available to qualified public safety personnel who pass the written and practical tests.


This fast-paced course will enhance your technical skills through obstacle courses and off-road riding; teach you maintenance, bike fit tips, and falling techniques, introduce you to search-and-rescue, and enable you to apply your skills in real-world scenarios, including ones requiring inter-agency operations.

Prerequisite:  Current IPMBA membership; law enforcement officer, EMS provider, or security personnel; completion of the IPMBA PC/EMSC/SC Course or alternate course of instruction; good physical condition   

Required Equipment:  IPMBA Police-EMS-Security Cyclist II Course Required Equipment and Materials

Certification:  IPMBA Police-EMS-Security Cyclist II Certificates of Completion are available to qualified public safety personnel who successfully complete the course requirements.


Through lectures, skill practice, and isolation drills, the IPMBA e-Bike Training Module is designed to transition fundamental public safety cycling skills from conventional bicycles to e-Bikes.  It is intended for public safety cyclists who have already successfully completed the applicable IPMBA Public Safety Cycling Course.   E-Bikes are faster, heavier, and less maneuverable than conventional bicycles; therefore, public safety cyclists should first master the skills on a conventional bike and then complete this training module prior to being deployed on an e-Bike.  *Note: this training module is not for use with out-of-class electric vehicles (OCEVs) that exceed the maximum legal speed limit and/or wattage for e-Bikes.
