Bicycle Response Team (BRT) Training
Authored by: Andrew Humes, PCI #1515T-B, EMSCI: #374T-B, College Station (TX) Police Department, IPMBA Board of Directors, Curriculum DevelopmentIn 2015, IPMBA created and released a revolutionary curriculum for crowd management and control: Bicycle Response Team. Developed through collaboration with agencies on both coasts and the Midwest, IPMBA placed a vetted and proven set of techniques and tactics in front of the best practitioners in the world, public safety cyclists. One could say it was the Gold Standard.
Even gold fluctuates in value, and, as with any curriculum, revisions are a necessary part of staying relevant, recent, and realistic. Shortly after the Complete Guide to Public Safety Cycling, 3rd Edition was released in 2022, another team assembled to prove out changes, update the look and feel of the slides and animation, and improve the lesson plans. A student workbook with visual references was developed to help riders retain the formations. The updates were evaluated at the Bentonville Conference in 2024, at an IPMBA-hosted BRT course in Norman, Oklahoma, in 2025, and finally in Honolulu, Hawai’i, this year.
Authorized instructors will have six months to purchase the update to continue providing the training. Keep an eye out for further communication regarding accessing the BRT 2026 on the Members Only section of IPMBA’s website! Participants in the BRT Instructor Transition Courses at the most recent Conferences in Bentonville and St. Louis will receive access at no charge.
