Sherman police get six new bikes, old bikes repurposed

SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) -- Sherman police will soon be patrolling the streets with a new ride, bikes.

They were recently given six bikes to start this new program, but this is a gift that keeps on giving.

"We had bikes but they were several years old, and so the parts get old," Sherman Police Chief Zachary Flores said.

It's been years since Sherman police have patrolled on bikes. But now, thanks to CrossFit Solus in Sherman, six bikes were donated to the department and they can now restart the program.

"They did that and then we were able to purchase some of the equipment to make them police bikes," Flores said.

As the department is training the officers and getting the bikes ready, putting on sirens and lights, the old bikes are finding a new purpose in the city.

"We are looking forward to getting the bicycles that the police are handing down to us," Sherman Parks and Recreation Manager Theresa Hutchinson said.

"So that we can evaluate our trails, see if there are any down limbs, washouts, anything like that."

Sherman Parks and Recreation has never had bikes before, so maintaining trails has been a challenge.

"We either have to walk, as you notice they are really narrow, so we cant even use a Gator, so it's primarily walking, which this trail itself is seven miles long," Hutchinson said.

But now the bicycles will speed up that process, and with recent bicycle safety initiatives in Sherman, both departments said their new gear came at a perfect time.

"So that those places that bikers do go, we will be able to serve them," Flores said.

Chief Flores said these bikes will make event patrolling easier, but will also help crack down on crime.

"Either vandalism or crimes against persons that may happen off the beaten path, we'll be able to go and we come across some things that we typically wouldn't see," Flores said.

The police bikes should be hitting the streets in the next few days.
