A new batch of pedalers are hitting the streets of downtown Redlands.

Four more police officers have been added to the Redlands Police Department’s bicycle force, which patrols the downtown area looking for loiterers and drunks, among other offenders.

The additions bring to 11 the number of officers riding mountain bikes in two-person, five-hour shifts during the day and the evening, according to police spokesman Carl Baker.

“With a patrol car, they see you coming,” the bike unit’s supervisor, Sgt. Ken Wright, said in a news release.

Bicycles are quieter and more versatile in some cases, he said.

The bicycle patrols supplement regular patrols, the release said, and focus primarily on an area bordered by Pearl Avenue to the north, Olive Avenue to the south, Eureka Street to the west and Sixth Street to the east.
