International Police Mountain Bike Conference held in Asheville

BY JENNIFER SAYLOR TUESDAY, APRIL 26TH 2016

WLOS — ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Maneuvering through traffic on a bike is just one of the skills being honed by bicycle officers Monday.

Dozens of police officers, firefighters and EMS workers were put to the test. It's part of this week's International Police Mountain Bike Conference in Asheville.

The Crowne Plaza parking lot was the perfect place to improve biking skills while keeping it safe.

"I attended one in 2011 in Richmond, Virginia and immediately thought Asheville would be the perfect place to hold a conference like this. It's a great training venue and cycling is kind of in our blood here," said Sgt. Evan Coward of the Asheville Police Department.

Asheville has 14 bike patrol officers who focus on the central business district.

More than 270 officers from around the globe are in town for the conference, which includes training on bike maintenance.
