Last August Hanoi residents were surprised to see police officers patrol streets and alleys on bicycles, but that has almost stopped now.

This is because most of the bicycles have been mothballed at police stations.

A recent visit by Thanh Nien reporters to some ward police stations in Nam Tu Liem, Ha Dong and Long Bien districts found the bikes covered with canvas and dusty. Some have started to rust.

Between August and December last year the city police department provided more than 1,000 bikes designed and made by state-owned company Thong Nhat for ward police officers in 12 districts to create “a friendly image” among the public.

The department said that by patrolling on bicycles, officers would be able to reach every small alley in the city.

When Thanh Nien asked about the abandoned bikes, Colonel Nguyen Xuan Dinh, head of the police’s social order division, said the issue would be examined.
