GREENSBORO — As part its Neighborhood Oriented Policing plan, Greensboro police will increase its bicycle patrols.

According to a news release, the patrols will offer more opportunities for personal contact and make officers seem more approachable.

"When people see an officer in a patrol car, their natural tendency may be to think, ‘What’s wrong?,’" Greensboro officer Scott Schneider said in the news release. "However, when they see an officer on a bicycle, they are more apt to come up to us to just talk."

The Greensboro Police Department has 70 bike trained officers, according to the news release. The bikes they use have lights, reinforced rims and a compartment for gear.
