Newnan GA -- Members of the Newnan Police Department’s bicycle patrol are riding high again after a generous donation from the Newnan-Coweta Public Safety Foundation.

The foundation was able to purchase four, fully-equipped police bicycles that are now in service.

Along with their regular circuits in the city, the bicycles are also designed to respond to areas that might not be well suited for patrol cars, such as parades, events like Taste of Newnan, and the 4th of July fireworks at Drake Stadium.

In the fall, officers will also take them to local schools to demonstrate bicycle safety.

The total cost of the bikes was approximately $4,320 and was made possible through various donations to the Newnan-Coweta Public Safety Foundation.

“I think it’s a blessing that so many people are coming out in support of our police officers,” said Norma Haynes, chairwoman of the foundation. “Bankers and merchants downtown are pleased to see our police on the bicycles."

The previous bicycles were almost 10 years old and were in bad shape, according to Chief D.L. “Buster” Meadows.

Last September, the foundation also donated several rescue bicycles to the Newnan Fire Department.

“We appreciate and are most grateful to our donors,” Haynes said. “We are able to provide some help for these underpaid, hardworking folks who are here for us 24 hours a day."

Donations to the foundation are accepted at any time and may be mailed to P.O. Box 1113, Newnan, GA 30264, Haynes said.
