Why retired Bethlehem Police Chief Jason Schiffer returned to Bethlehem Wednesday

Retired Bethlehem Police Comissioner Jason Schiffer, now a lawyer, stopped by City Hall Wednesday to deliver a $2,500 check from his firm to the police bike unit he founded.

The money will pay for equipment and uniforms for five to eight bike officers, a unit that has grown to 17 officers in the 155-officer department.

The bike officers are used for regular patrols, races, festivals and other public events. They also patrol alongside Lehigh University police officers on the South Side.

Schiffer, a nationally accredited bike officer, presented the check on behalf of law firm of Cohen, Feeley, Altemose and Rambo.
