North Bay ON -- You'll likely see an increased police presence on bike patrols this summer as 12 North Bay police officers completed comprehensive bicycle patrol training this week.
The coppers undertook specialized training provided by instructors from the Ottawa Police Service. The training consisted of a number of different elements including the operation of bicycles in unsafe conditions and the apprehension of suspects while operating a bicycle.
"The completion of this training significantly increases the number of North Bay Police Service officers who are able to be deployed on bicycle patrols throughout our community," says a release. "
Bicycle patrols are scheduled to commence at the beginning of June and will focus on identified priority neighbourhoods.
The patrols will operate throughout the summer.
"The use of bicycles provides officers with the ability to easily patrol areas of the city that a police vehicle may not be able to, such as the Kinsmen Trail and Kate Pace Way," explains the release. "The presence of a visible officer on patrol also helps to deter crimes before they happen and provides citizens with an easy way to engage police when needed."
The North Bay Police Service uses Electric Assist Bicycles that were donated to the Police Service in 2020 by Farquhar Chrysler. With pedal assist, the motor engages only when the pedals are being rotated as opposed to electric bikes which provide constant power.
The e-bikes are fully equipped with police lights and sirens and are able to reach a top speed of 42km/h.
“The completion of this bicycle training significantly enhances our ability to provide effective, diversified patrol options for the people of North Bay,” said Jeff Warner, Inspector of Operations. “Like so many other members of our community, I look forward to seeing police bicycle patrols back on our streets come June.”
