Delhi Police personnel will now be seen riding bicycles while patrolling in congested areas of the Walled City and parks of North Delhi with a view to check crimes such as snatching.

Eight high-performance geared bicycles have been recently bought by the Delhi Police for beat constables to patrol identified areas in the morning and evening hours.

"Snatchers have been targeting morning and evening walkers in parks. As motorcycles cannot be used in these areas, policemen will patrol these areas on bicycles," a police official said.

In Kotwali area, beat constables will patrol from 8 AM to 10 AM in the morning and 4 PM to 6 PM in the evening around Red Fort, Moat Road, New Daryaganj Road, Delhi Chalo Park, Gyan Path and 15 August Park Red Fort. Similar patrolling will take place in Company Bagh, Metro Park, Mahila Park Kachcha Bagh from 6 AM to 10 AM and 4 PM to 6 PM.

One bicycle is being used for patrolling in Delhi University area while another one is being used in Roopnagar Area, police said.

"Though cycles were already used in some districts for patrolling, we have recently bought eight high-performance five-gear bicycles costing around 10,000 per piece for patrolling in parks and congested areas.

"This will help us keep a tab on illegal activities in areas inaccessible by other vehicles," Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma said.

We have been motivating our men to use bicycles as it not only takes them to remote areas but also keeps them fit.

"The Walled City area has narrow congested bylanes. Going into some of the alleys is tough even by motorcycles, leave alone a PCR van. These bicycles will help us reach such areas," another official said.
