BINGHAMTON NY (WBNG) -- The Binghamton community will be seeing a few more police officers on bikes. On Tuesday, Senator Fred Akshar announced the Binghamton Police Department will receive a $25,000 public protection grant that will go toward funding bike patrols.
He said the grant money will be divided into buying new patrol bikes, funding patrol and bicycle training school costs along with helping fund the overtime cost of officers assigned to patrols.
Akshar said one of the goals of having officers on bikes in the community is to create better relationships with community members.
"Projects and programs that foster good relationships that increase presence in particular neighborhoods and make the community and law enforcement works together and have good relationships and clearly this is doing that," said Akshar.
Officials said the officers will be sent to specific areas around the city to patrol on bikes.
