By CHRISTINE DEMPSEY, Hartford Courant, August 20, 2014

HAMDEN — Officers patrolling a trail on bikes arrested three people and confiscated 94 bags of heroin after becoming suspicious of someone police say was doing more than hiking.

The arrests happened about 6 p.m. Monday, police said, when officers Gregg Curran and Enrique River-Rodriguez were patrolling the Farmington Canal Trail on bicycles. They noticed a person walk through an opening in the fence along the west side of the trail and rode through the opening, they said. They then saw a car parked behind some bushes.

Inside, it turned out, a drug transaction was in progress, police said. Police seized 32.6 grams of heroin and arrested Jeffrey O. Crewe, 39, of Wintergreen Avenue; Lache McGee, 35, of Morse Street and JonMichael Young, 35, of Shelton Avenue, all in Hamden.

All three were charged with possession of narcotics, possession with intent to sell, operating a drug factory and other charges, police said. They were in custody on $100,000 bail.
