NY -- New Windsor police officers have brought back bicycle patrol training this month.

Officer Jeremy Arcaro, the certified instructor for the bicycle training program, said he is excited for the comeback.

“Last year, we kind of wanted to build our community interaction, so Lt. Fayo and I kind of put something together, and we put it to the higher-ups just to see how it would gain traction,” said Arcaro.

Arcaro said there are many benefits to having officers on bikes.

“It’s more personable with the officers. They're not just in their vehicles all the time. And honestly, we get to exercise right now,” he said.

Arcaro said the initiative leading into the warmer weather will help serve the community, especially with more outside events coming up.

“It's actually easier to get, I wouldn't say get through people, but get around to people when you're on a bike, because it's so small compared to a patrol vehicle,” said Arcaro.

He said he hopes the community feels more at ease that they will see more officers patrolling the area.
