LOWER MORELAND, PA — The Lower Moreland Police Department is hailing the actions of one of its bicycle patrol officers in relation to an arrest the officer made late last year.
Officer Saman Hashemi-Sohi has been named the township's Officer of the Month for his actions back in November during a drug related arrest.
Hashemi-Sohi was on routine bike patrol on Nov. 15 at around 3:25 in the morning in the area of Roy Lane when he watched as a man walked up and down residential driveways in that section of the township.
The officer approached the man, but the suspect initially took off running, before complying with Hashemi-Sohi, according to the police department.
The man admitted that he was attempting to steal items from vehicles in order to support his heroin addiction, according to police.
Hashemi-Sohi arrested the individual, who was not immediately named by police, and a search of the suspect turned up drugs, money, a hypodermic needle and other items, police stated.
"Officer Hashemi-Sohi did a fantastic job utilizing his patrol bicycle to capture this male in the act," the police department wrote in a statement. "LMPD's bicycle unit was formed for reasons like this one. Bike patrol units offer a high-visibility and proactive community policing presence."
