Re: Aug. 6 article, “Mellow Johnny’s to cops: No bikes for you.”

Mellow Johnny’s canceled its bicycle contract with the Austin Police Department because of the way bikes were used in crowd management efforts during recent protests.

Did Mellow Johnny’s discuss the issue with APD and get a full accounting of the facts prior to this decision? Or even to express concerns allowing APD an opportunity to present its viewpoint and responsibilities? Were the bikes used unlawfully, in a violent manner, or was the nature of use necessary to maintain civil order?

Mellow Johnny’s thinks its decision will “suture” the divides in our community. Like the matter of face coverings during a pandemic has unified us all? Who among us would like to be a police officer during these times?
