Two New Bikes are Hitting the Streets for the Sacramento Police Department

A couple of Sacramento Police officers will switch from four wheels to two as they patrol a stretch of Stockton Boulevard.

In a ceremony Thursday, the Stockton Boulevard Partnership gave a $3,000 gift to the Sacramento Police Department -- two bikes, outfitted with all the police gear they would need to use on patrol.

Spokesperson Sgt. Doug Morse says the donation is meant to help build relationships between cops and the community.

"That connection with the community is enhanced when we're are able to use methods of policing in that division," he said.

They will use the bikes to patrol six square miles through the Stockton Boulevard corridor as part of the vision for "Safety on Stockton" and in an effort to to make Sacramento the Safest Big City in California.

"We're very fortunate to have that partnership. We do know that the community engagement and the connection with the community is truly the essence of police work," Morse said.

He says those patrol bicycles will be going into service right away.
