Riding the beat: Officers train on bikes for RNC security

SOUTH EUCLID - Law enforcement officers from around the area are preparing for this summer's Republican National Convention.

Starting Friday, Steve Kensinger and Jim Ruma, [IPMBA] instructors from Bikestrong, trained about 20 officers who will be working during the RNC. These officers will be "riding" the beat, on their bikes.

The training is taking place at Notre Dame College in South Euclid.

"We are making sure everyone will be ready," Kensinger told Fox 8. " You never know what to prepare for, so we prepare for the worst."

The officers are learning proper skills and tactics for taking part in a bike patrol unit that will help keep Cleveland street safe this July during the Republican National Convention.

"This is a great opportunity and I am really excited to be able to help out at the RNC, " said Newburgh Heights Officer Rachel Volkar.

She along with three others from her department will be on bikes during the RNC.

Notre Dame College Police Chief Jeff Scott said the bike patrols will play an important role during the RNC since bikes can get to areas that a cruiser can't.

"The RNC is very important and we are here to make Cleveland shine," Kensinger said.
