CHICO, Calif. -

The Chico Police Department has plans to begin summer bike patrols and increase staffing at Bidwell Park after several incidents.

Police were able to catch two suspects and return the stolen phone to the victim of Tuesday's assault and armed robbery near One Mile in Bidwell Park.

The incident, and others like it, have people visiting the park concerned.

"We like to be able to walk and enjoy the park, Bidwell is beautiful and we love being here, but it does get a little bit concerning sometimes," said Colleen Dux, a woman who frequents the park.

Chico Police Cheif Mike O'Brien said he takes the issue very seriously.

"Everyone should have the right to visit, recreate and enjoy our parks," said O'Brien.

O'Brien said that starting around June 1, there will be police bike patrols in downtown and Bidwell Park.

They will go Monday through Thursday during the daytime, but O'Brien said that schedule is subject to change. He explained that bikes are more accessible to the community.

"Someone could wave down a bike officer easier than if they were in a car," said O'Brien.

The police department will also be increasing staffing. Currently, five new officers are in training, one is in the academy and they are looking to hire four more.

"That will greatly enhance our ability to provide service," said O'Brien.

They will need about a year of training before they are fully functioning officers, and will fill the vacant positions being the department to a full force of 92 officers.
