A man accused of trying to run down airport police officers in a car Saturday night was charged Tuesday with first-degree assault.

Hennepin County prosecutors said Mohamud Mohammed Maye, 36, of Maple Plain, Minn., drove at an officer who was on a bicycle in the rental car area of the Terminal 1 parking ramp at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

The suspect is also known as Abdul Kadir Sheikh Mahmoud and was identified by that name in initial police reports.

Maye later rammed a squad car and backed into two other officers, injuring them, according to court documents. He crashed after officers shot him.

Maye was hospitalized. He has since been released and is being held in the Hennepin County Jail with bail set at $450,000.

The officers were investigating a report of suspicious activity in an area that's seen a rash of auto thefts, according to Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said there is no known connection between Maye and the thefts, and no clear motive for why he drove at officers.

Maye is scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday.
