‘He’s lucky he didn’t injure or kill me’: Halton bike cop nearly hit by car in Burlington

June 21, 2019 by Louie Rosella  Burlington Post

A man has been charged with distracted driving after a Halton Regional Police says he was nearly struck by a car because the driver was on his phone and not paying attention.

The incident occurred Thursday (June 20) around Lakeshore Road and Burlington Avenue, when Halton Const. Matt Baker, while on patrol on his bike, said he noticed a male driver in a Kia Forte talking on his phone while driving.

The officer said the driver then changed lanes and went into the bike lane and nearly struck the officer.

"I slammed on my brakes to avoid a collision," Baker said in his notes, which he posted on Twitter. "He's lucky he didn't injure or kill me."

Baker stopped the driver and issued a distracted driving charge, a charge which carries a $615 fine, three demerit points and a three-day driver's licence suspension.

The driver asked for a reduced fine.

"Sorry but even if there was a reduced fine for distracted driving you won’t receive it from me after almost colliding with me due to being distracted," the officer said on Twitter.
