The bicycle patrol program returned to Fontana streets this week after approximately three years on hiatus, according to the Fontana Police Department.
The bicycle patrol team consists of Corporal Marc Gonzales and Officer Rich Guerrero, who will be riding their bikes to enhance visibility in the community.
The officers will be working different shifts throughout the week to patrol parks during sporting events and visit special events and shopping centers.
Residents will also see the officers riding along the Pacific Electric Trail from the border of Rialto to Rancho Cucamonga in order to maintain safety and improve quality of life issues in those areas.
"The bicycle unit is very effective in patrolling the parks, schools, and downtown area," said Police Chief Rodney Jones." I am excited that we have the opportunity to start up, once again, our bicycle unit to serve our Fontana residents."
The Fontana P.D.'s bike patrol program previously had six officers at its peak, but budgetary constraints caused the department to reassign the officers to other areas. The department has decided to bring back the program now that staffing levels allow for two officers to be assigned to the bike patrol unit. There are plans to expand the program in the future.
