HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – A local Hampshire County business has donated a bike to the Thee-College Campus Police.
This is actually the fourth bike donated by UMass Five College Federal Credit Union to the Three-College Campus Police. They are a department that serves Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges.
UMass Five and the Three-College Campus Police have a partnership to educate students on bike safety, crime prevention, and identity theft. Having more officers on bikes means having more power to reduce accidents on and around campus.
“We’re more visible in the neighborhoods. We’re more visible in those areas where the cruisers can’t go, and it also creates more of an opportunity for the public to communicate and interact with our officers when they’re on a bicycle,” Earl Brown of the Three-College Campus Police Department said.
The donated bike costs an estimated $700. It will be used between Smith, Hampshire, and Mount Holyoke Colleges; depending on the needs of the officers. The police department is hoping to use it for the first time Monday, when the weather warms up.
