Claremore PD adds to bike patrol

By Miranda Christian, Fox23 News, July 4, 2014

Claremore, OK — The Claremore Police Department has two new bicycle officers patrolling their Fourth of July celebrations and they tell FOX23 it makes a big difference.

The annual Fourth of July celebration at Claremore Lake was packed.

Officer Jordan Holland, head of the bike unit for Claremore Police, was excited to have additional patrols Friday evening because the bikes make it easier for people to approach and interact with them.

"People love the bikes. They will come up and talk to us 100 times before they talk to us in our patrol car," says Holland, whose main focus is being available to the public.  "We will maintain the law, but we are really here to be in the public eye and be friendly."

FOX23 talked to several people at the festival who told us it was a great idea.

"It's a good thing because of all the attacks that happened in Tulsa," says Nikki Farmer.

Officer Holland says they have four officers in bikes right now and hope to have it fully staffed with ten bike officers.
