BOZEMAN, Mont. -
The Montana State University Police Department is holding special bicycle training for Bozeman police officers.
The 4-day Mountain Bike Patrol Training course will help five officers receive certification to be a bicycle patrol officer. The course is designed to educate officers on the job's fitness, technical skill, and safety requirements.
MSU police explained there are advantages to having officers on two wheels.
Sgt. Matt Wemple said, "You're getting into places that patrol cars just can't go. You're not insulated like you are in a patrol vehicle. You see and you hear a lot more things. You observe a lot more. Detecting criminal activity is exponentially higher when you're on a bicycle than when you're in a patrol car."
Before the officers finish they will be trained in trail and hill riding as well as operating their firearm immediately after dismounting their bikes.
