B-CYCLE AIDS COPS IN RUNNER’S ARREST

By Jesse Paul, The Denver Post, June 18, 2015

A Denver police officer commandeered a B-cycle on the city’s Cherry Creek Bike Path this month in a creative — and successful — effort to arrest a fleeing man wanted on several felony warrants.

The officer commandeered the bike June 3 as authorities were trying to arrest Jose Delgado, 28, who police say was known to flee from law enforcement.

Delgado was first spotted riding as a passenger in a vehicle near the intersection of Little Raven and 19th streets. Officers pulled over the car nearby for a traffic stop. Police then called in tactical officers to assist in the arrest.

“As the vehicle came to a stop, Delgado bailed out of the vehicle, jumping a retaining wall that lead to the Cherry Creek bike path,” police said Tuesday on Facebook. “Officers gave chase.”

As Delgado ran north along the bike path, police say, one of the officers stopped a man on a B-cycle, and, with his permission, commandeered his rented bike to catch up with the fleeing suspect.

“(Delgado) saw the B-cycle-riding officer, realized he was surrounded ... and attempted to jump off (a) bridge into the creek,” the post said. “Knowing that if Delgado was able to jump he would surely get or away or be seriously injured, the B-cycle-riding officer quickly dismounted the bike and reached over the railing, holding Delgado in place until additional officers arrived to assist in taking him into custody.”
