A Call to Reaffirm Your Oath of Honor

A Message from IACP President Richard Beary

This Friday, May 15, is Peace Officers Memorial Day. Each year, on this day, citizens pay tribute to the state, local, and federal law enforcement officers for their service and the sacrifices they have made.

On Peace Officers Memorial Day, I ask that you join me, in reaffirming your Oath of Honor to the public we serve. A public affirmation of adhering to the Oath of Honor is a powerful vehicle demonstrating ethical standards. It is critical that we raise our right hand and reaffirm our efforts to protect lives, defend civil liberties, and secure the safety of our fellow citizens.

A Call to Reaffirm Your Oath of Honor

Please join me, and encourage others in your agency, to stand up and say the following pledge.

On my honor,
I will never betray my badge,
my integrity, my character,
or the public trust.
I will always have
the courage to hold myself
and others accountable for our actions.
I will always uphold the constitution
my community and the agency I serve.

In addition to renewing your Oath of Honor, I also ask that you join our efforts in the #WhyIWearTheBadge campaign. Many thanks to all of the agencies from around the world that have participated thus far. The public needs to hear why we do what we do. Future law enforcement leaders need to know why wearing the badge is so important, and our communities need to know that we care and take our oath to serve and protect very seriously. Please continue to share your #WhyIWearTheBadge photos, videos, and stories on social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.

Thank you for all that you do. Please stay safe.
