Host Bicycle Response Team Training

Arrangements to host an IPMBA Bicycle Response Team Training (BRTT) should be made directly with an individual instructor.   For information on hosting an Instructor Course, visit the FAQs. 

To contact instructors in your area directly, use the online instructor search on this page or contact IPMBA for a reference.  Only those instructors who have the letter "B" appended to their instructor number(s) are eligible to teach the BRTT.  

To request that a request for proposals be sent out to IPMBA's instructor networks, please email the following information to info@ipmba.org:

  • Your name
  • Your department/agency name
  • Your telephone number
  • Your email address
  • The type of course you would like to host
  • The number of students you would like trained (maximum 10 per instructor)
  • The time frame in which you would like to hold the course
  • Any other specific information you require

Facility Requirements

Training Venues
  • Classroom with seating adequate for enrollment and equipped with computer projection equipment, screen, and whiteboard, chalkboard, or flipchart/markers (instructor will supply laptop computer)
  • Minimum 100’ x 100’ parking lot with minimal obstructions
  • Parking garage, min 300' x 125' for smoke drills (optional - can use parking lot)
  • Streets & alleys for scenarios
  • Secure training facility with large outdoor area, such as police or fire training academy for scenario (if possible)
  • Weapons clearing station/storage with armed guard during scenario practical
Equipment
  • 150 cones
  • Four 4-ft. long 2 x 4 (scrap lumber)
  • Four 4-ft. long 4 x 4 (scrap lumber)
  • EMS students only:  1000cc expired IV bags (10 per student) or other weights (e.g., one-litre bottles filled with sand - not sandbags) to equal 30 lbs per student.)
  • Police tape
  • Whistle
Scenario Props
  • Smoke grenades and bucket to unload them into (optional; 6 for up to 10 students; 8-10 for more)
  • Fire extinguisher (if smoke is deployed)
  • 50 plastic bottles/zip-loc bags of water/tennis balls/crushed cans/other projectiles (for throwing during the scenario)
  • Protest signs
  • Backpack(s)
  • Scarves, balaclavas, or other face coverings
  • Simulated explosive device (Molotov cocktail)
  • CS, OC, and impact weapons (optional)
  • Moulage kit (if available)
  • Super Soaker style water dispersion/Inert or safe device (children's orange cap)
  • Squad car with PA/siren/ability to blare radio
Personnel
  • Department liaison
  • Safety officers for scenario
  • 20 role players for scenario
  • EMS support on standby during scenario
  • Assistance with set-up as needed
Miscellaneous
  • Secure storage area for participants’ bicycles and equipment during classroom sessions
  • Map and guides/transportation to on-bike training locations as needed (min. one guide per 10 students)
  • Communications between guides and at least one instructor
  • Protocol for summoning EMS in the event of serious injury
  • Mechanical support (on-call bike shop for emergency repairs, shipping/receiving bikes, etc.)
  • Water, first aid supplies, & restroom facilities at training site  
  • Caution/Police Tape/Training signs as needed
  • Meal location(s)
  • Parking permits as needed

Student Requirements

Duty Bicycle
  • Reputable manufacturer mountain bike in good working order, properly fitted
  • Street/combination tires (size 26-29 x 1.5 - 26-29 x 2.1; no knobbies)
  • Pedal retention devices (BMX-style platform pedals are not acceptable)
  • At least one water bottle cage & bottle
  • On-body hydration delivery system (recommended)
  • Headlight (42 lumens at 10 feet)
  • L.E.D. steady or flashing red taillight
  • Rear mount kick stand
  • Rear rack with full size rack bag
  • Heavy duty rear rack with full-size rack bag and panniers (EMS only)
Tools
  • Patch kit
  • Tire levers
  • Chain tool
  • Two spare tubes
  • Compact tire pump or CO2
  • 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 mm allen wrenches
Safety Equipment
  • Eye protection – shatter-resistant, wraparound, clear and tinted
  • Bicycle helmet (ANSI, Snell or CPSC-approved)
  • Padded cycling gloves
  • Body armor protective vest (if worn on duty)
Attire
  • Full duty uniform
    • Shirt
    • Shorts/Pants
  • Shoes
  • Padded cycling shorts (strongly recommended)
  • Foul weather gear (jacket, pants)
  • Plain black tee-shirt
