This course is followed by a 2-day Advanced Tactics for the Police Cyclist course (grant-funded). Additional fee ($410) required. Students can attend either or both classes, must register separately for each.

Kathleen Vonk is a former IPMBA President and Board Member, had been an IPMBA Police Cyclist Instructor since 1993 and has taught at IPMBA's international conferences since 1995. She assisted in the design of and teaches the Advanced PC Course, the Survival Tactics and Advanced Riding Skills Course (STARS), and the current Night Ops, Firearms and Tactics Course (NO-FAT) at IPMBA's international conference. She is an adjunct instructor for Team One Network and former adjunct instructor for H&K International Training Division. She instructs in a variety of police survival disciplines including firearms, Active Countermeasures, Simunitions, and tactical fitness. She holds a BS in Exercise Science and a BA in Criminal Justice. She has worked the street by choice since1988 and has been on bicycle patrol for the Ann Arbor Police Department in Michigan (Go Blue) since 1993.

Bicycle officers need to ride whenever and wherever they are needed. Proper training is essential to an officer's on-the-job performance and safety. It is also critical in reducing liability. The PC course provides bicycle officers with the skills they need to effectively serve their communities. The course is divided into eleven units: Bike Handling & Vehicular Cycling, Bike Fit, Group Riding, Hazard Recognition & Common Crashes, Obstacle Clearing & Riding Techniques, Patrol Procedures, Nighttime Patrol, Community Policing, Basic Maintenance, Legal Issues & Traffic Laws, and Fitness & Nutrition. This demanding class involves over 20 hours of on-bike time to develop and improve riding skills.

Testing Procedure: written & on-bike
Requirements:
Applicants must be police officers currently assigned to bike patrol, officers applying to become members of a bike unit, or members of a department considering use of the bicycle.
Certification: IPMBA Certification is available to sworn police officers who successfully complete the practical test, earn a score of 76% or better on the written test, become members of IPMBA, and submit applications for certification accompanied by the appropriate fee.
