The Emporia Police Department will be hosting a 40 hour police bike certification course August 25th thru , August 29th, 2008. Bike patrol can reduce your fuel costs and has some very positive advantages in policing your jurisdiction. Virtually every jurisdiction can benefit from police on bikes.

Cost of the training will be $185 per officer. This will include all class material including the Complete Guide to Cycling book, fruit and sports drink each day, two meals and class photo. It also includes International Police Mountain Bike Association membership fee, and certification fee. The training will be held at the Water Treatment Facility Training room at 24th and Industrial. This 40 hour training course is divided into eleven units: Bike Handling & Vehicular Cycling, Bike Fit, Group Riding, Hazard & Recognition & Common Crashes, Obstacle Clearing & Riding Techniques, Patrol Procedures, Nightime Patrol, Community Policing, Basic Maintenance, Legal Issues & Traffic Laws & Fitness and Nutrition. This is a demanding week of training involving over 20 hours of on-bike training to develop and improve riding skills.

Equipment needed for the class
* 50 Rounds of ammunition for range day
* Properly fitted helmet
* Eye protection
* Padded cycling gloves
* Department issued whistle
* Proper law enforcment/cycling footwear
* Padded cycling shorts
* Bike bag and rear bike rack
* Air pump
* Took kit, to include a tire repair kit
* Spare inner tube (2 if possible)
* Working headlight/taillight
* Proper department issued uniform and full duty gear, to include rain gear/clothing for all weather conditions
* Proper Hydration System either water bottles or Camelbak

Description : :

Bicycle officers need to ride whenever and wherever they are needed. Proper training is essential to an officer's on-the-job performance and safety. It is also critical in reducing liability. The PC course provides bicycle officers with the skills they need to effectively serve their communities. The course is divided into eleven units: Bike Handling & Vehicular Cycling, Bike Fit, Group Riding, Hazard Recognition & Common Crashes, Obstacle Clearing & Riding Techniques, Patrol Procedures, Nighttime Patrol, Community Policing, Basic Maintenance, Legal Issues & Traffic Laws, and Fitness & Nutrition. Requirements:
Applicants must be police officers currently assigned to bike patrol, officers applying to become members of a bike unit, or members of a department considering use of the bicycle.
Certification: IPMBA Certification is available to sworn police officers who successfully complete the practical test, earn a score of 76% or better on the written test, become members of IPMBA, and submit applications for certification accompanied by the appropriate fee.
